Power System Studies

Coordination Studies

Time-current curve analysis that isolates faults to the smallest section possible, protecting equipment, uptime, and life safety.

Overview

Selective coordination ensures that when a fault occurs, only the device immediately upstream of the fault trips. The rest of the facility stays online. We plot time-current curves for every protective device in the distribution network, identify coordination gaps, and recommend setting changes to restore selectivity, including the 0.1-second selectivity requirement for emergency, legally required standby, and critical operations systems under NEC 700, 701, and 708.

What's included

Scope of work

TCC plotting for every protective device on the studied feeders

Selective coordination evaluation between upstream and downstream devices

NEC 700.32 / 701.27 / 708.54 evaluation for emergency, LRS, and COPS systems

Setting recommendations for adjustable trip breakers and relays

Damage curve overlay for transformers, cables, and motors

PE-stamped report with TCC plots and setting tables

Methodology

How the engagement runs

A consistent process means predictable timelines, fewer surprises, and a defensible record if anyone (AHJ, insurance, OSHA) asks how the work was done.

  1. 01

    Existing-condition data

Protective device makes, models, and as-found settings captured from the field along with conductor and transformer data.

  2. 02

    TCC plotting

Curves plotted in ETAP or EasyPower with damage curves overlaid.

  3. 03

    Gap analysis

Each upstream/downstream pair evaluated for selectivity; any overlaps within the fault current range are flagged.

  4. 04

    Setting optimization

Adjustable settings are tuned to restore selectivity while preserving equipment damage protection.

  5. 05

    Report

Final TCC plots, recommended settings table, and PE-stamped summary delivered.
