Power System Studies

Harmonic Analysis

Power-quality studies for facilities with VFDs, UPS systems, and other non-linear loads. We diagnose distortion before it damages equipment.

Overview

Variable-frequency drives, rectifiers, and UPS systems pull non-sinusoidal current that distorts voltage waveforms across the facility. Excessive harmonic distortion causes transformer overheating, capacitor failure, neutral overload, and nuisance tripping. We measure existing distortion with power-quality recorders, model the system in ETAP or EasyPower, and recommend filters, transformer K-factor specifications, or VFD configuration changes that bring you back into IEEE 519 compliance.

What's included

Scope of work

On-site harmonic measurement (typically 7–14 days with PQ recorders)

Source impedance characterization

Frequency-domain modeling of the distribution network

Voltage and current distortion calculation at the point of common coupling

IEEE 519 compliance evaluation

Mitigation recommendation: passive filters, active filters, K-factor transformers, or drive-side mitigation

Methodology

How the engagement runs

A consistent process means predictable timelines, fewer surprises, and a defensible record if anyone (AHJ, insurance, OSHA) asks how the work was done.

  1. 01

    PQ recording

Class A power-quality meters deployed at the service and selected feeders for 7–14 days.

  2. 02

    Network modeling

Frequency-domain model built reflecting transformer impedances, cable, and VFD/rectifier sources.

  3. 03

    Distortion analysis

THD-V and THD-I evaluated against IEEE 519 limits at the PCC and at problem buses.

  4. 04

    Mitigation design

Filter tuning, transformer phase-shifting, or drive-side LCL filter recommendations modeled and verified.

  5. 05

    Report

PE-stamped report with measurement data, simulation results, and prioritized recommendations.
